1) What is your job at Compass Evangelical Free Church?

Teaching and Preaching has been my privilege for several years at Compass E-Free, in the main service and in Bible Study Class and small group. Leading with the staff, with the elders and with ministry teams allows me to join with leaders to create vision and focus for the church as we seek to minister in Columbia. Meeting guests of our church and helping to get them connected is a special objective for me, as I enjoy meeting people who want to check out Compass E-Free.

2) What is the favorite part of your job?

I’m crazy about the pursuit of truth, there are so many simple truths that have so much depth in the Scripture, and learning and discussing these truths is key to my job. Teaching and preaching the truths of Scripture in a life-transforming way brings the most joy to me in my job.

3) Where are you from?

I was born in Iowa but immediately moved into Wisconsin, Green and Gold territory. I bleed Green and Gold for the Green Bay Packers having lived most of my life in Racine, Wisconsin, where I met my lovely wife.

4) Who is in your family?

My best friend and partner is Peggy Phillips and we have been married for over 25 years. We have been in Columbia, MO for 12 years and came here with three young children, Briana, Nathan and Bethany. All three kids have grown up while in Missouri and they are all in college or high school right now.

5) What’s your favorite bible verse?

Picking a favorite Bible verse is like picking your favorite desert, I haven’t encountered one I didn’t like yet. But Micah 7:18 has always meant a lot to me, it is a play on Micah’s name which means “Who is a God like you” and the verse says God pardons and forgives and delights to show mercy. What a God we serve.

6) I recommend…

Reading good theological books (the Bible primarily) because the better we know and understand God the better we will be at living according to his plans and purpose and the joy of life will flow to us regardless of the circumstances of life.

7) These are a few of my favorite things…

Watching a good movie, reading a challenging book, making a good meal with my family, and the Green Bay Packers (especially during the playoffs while the Bears sit at home!)
